Meta made the decision last year to reinstate Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts after banning him from the platforms following the Jan. 6 riot. It appears that the former president can go back to posting pictures of his McDonald’s order without worry as the social media company also removed the restrictions placed on his accounts, as first reported by Axios on Friday.
When Meta restored Trump’s accounts, there were guardrails put in place in case he, you know, tried to start another riot. With the Republican and Democratic national conventions coming up in a matter of weeks and Election Day just a few months away, Meta decided to roll back the restrictions on the account as he is the presumptive Republican candidate for President.
“In assessing our responsibility to allow political expression, we believe that the American people should be able to hear from the nominees for President on the same basis,” Meta said in a new update on a blog post regarding the status of the former president’s accounts. “As a result, former President Trump, as the nominee of the Republican Party, will no longer be subject to the heightened suspension penalties.”
Now does this mean Trump can post the latest QAnon conspiracies or pretend that he knows nothing about Project 2025? Probably not, but then again, Trump puts all the real batshit stuff your uncle loves to share with you on his Truth Social account.
This move by Meta comes days after Trump threatened company CEO Mark Zuckerberg with prison time. Zuck has been one of Trump’s regular targets on Truth Social since his 2020 election loss for some reason. The former president blames the now ripped, grappler tech billionaire for being part of the elaborate plan to steal the election from him, referred to appropriately as the“Big Lie.” Keep in mind, in 2022, Meta made changes to its policies making it okay to buy ads saying the election was rigged.
