The home release of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is coming soon and it’s easily one of the most highly anticipated of the year. Because the film is so great and we want to revisit it over and over, sure, but also because it’s got a fantastic set of special features, a piece of which you can exclusively see right here, right now.
The film will be released digitally July 9 and on physical disc August 27. Of those, the 4K physical release is the only one including the big ticket item, “Inside the Lens: The Raw Cut,” which is a “full-length alternative cut with a split-screen comparison between the final cut of the film and a version with unfinished VFX with optional audio commentary by director Wes Ball, editor Dan Zimmerman and VFX supervisor Erik Winquist.”
Both editions, however, also have 14 deleted scenes and a more traditional behind-the-scenes documentary called “Inside the Forbidden Zone: Making Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.” It follows, you guessed it, the making of the film, including an “Ape School” the actors attended to learn to move and act like apes. In this exclusive io9 clip, you get just a glimpse of it.
So let’s recap. Next week, July 9, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes comes to digital with 14 deleted scenes and a behind-the-scenes documentary. Then, on August 27 it’ll be on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K, with the 4K including with the additional alternate cut without full visual effects.
Is there more? Yes, there is. Select digital retailers will offer a special $100 bundle to get all 10 Apes films in one shot. Not too bad.
